Wudinna advances technical definition
Cobra Resources reported that it completed the acquisition of three additional exploration licences during the first half of 2026, expanding its prospective land position in South Australia to more than 3,200 square kilometres. The company also reported favourable metallurgy at the Head prospect, one of the areas within the wider Wudinna heavy rare earth project.
After the reporting period, Cobra said assays were completed for a 74-hole sonic-core drilling programme. The company also engaged an independent service provider to prepare a maiden mineral resource estimate while hydrological and development studies continued. These steps are intended to improve the geological and technical basis for evaluating the project.
Why dysprosium and terbium matter to magnets
Wudinna is being evaluated for ionic rare earth mineralisation that includes dysprosium and terbium. These heavy rare earth elements can be used in high-performance NdFeB magnets to help maintain coercivity at elevated temperatures. They are particularly relevant to selected motor, aerospace, automation and other demanding applications, although manufacturers increasingly optimise additions through alloy design and grain-boundary diffusion.
The company has also described a controlled in-situ recovery concept for part of the project. Such a route could differ materially from conventional excavation and beneficiation, so permeability, hydrology, reagent behaviour, recovery rates and environmental controls will be central to technical and regulatory assessment.
Procurement implications remain long term
A first resource estimate will help define scale and confidence, but it will not by itself prove economic recovery or commercial availability. Magnet buyers should monitor the grade distribution of Dy and Tb, recoveries under representative conditions, product form, impurity control, permitting progress and the downstream separation route.
For current sourcing decisions, the announcement is best used as a supply-chain watch item. Buyers of high-temperature NdFeB magnets should continue to specify magnetic grade, maximum working temperature, coating, geometry and validation method, while separately tracking whether new heavy-rare-earth projects can produce consistent material at commercial scale.
