Summary: China’s rare-earth market stayed broadly stable on September 28, while softer Pr-Nd alloy pricing and limited transactions showed that downstream magnet buyers remained cautious ahead of the National Day holiday.
Stable oxides, cautious metal buyers
Shanghai Metals Market reported that rare-earth oxide prices were generally stable, including the main Pr-Nd, dysprosium and terbium products followed by permanent-magnet manufacturers. The more visible adjustment occurred in Pr-Nd alloy, where offers softened as trading remained limited.
SMM attributed the quiet market to timing as well as demand. Many downstream magnetic-material companies had already completed their pre-holiday procurement, reducing the need for additional orders before the National Day break. Buyers were also waiting for clearer order signals after the holiday rather than chasing higher offers.
What the market signal means for NdFeB sourcing
Stable oxide quotations do not automatically mean stable finished-magnet costs. NdFeB pricing also depends on alloy conversion, grade, heavy-rare-earth content, processing yield, coating, tolerances, magnetization and order volume. A short-term slowdown in spot transactions may narrow immediate price pressure, but it does not remove lead-time or availability risk for specialized grades.
The reported spread between relatively firm raw-material costs and softer metal offers is also worth monitoring. If metal producers cannot pass through costs, margins may tighten even while headline oxide prices appear unchanged. That can affect quotation validity and suppliers’ willingness to accept small or urgent orders.
Practical purchasing checks
- Request a validity period for quotations instead of assuming a spot indication will remain available.
- Separate the raw-material component from machining, coating, magnetization and inspection costs.
- Confirm holiday production and logistics schedules before promising customer delivery dates.
- For high-temperature grades, monitor dysprosium and terbium exposure separately from the main Pr-Nd trend.
- Compare post-holiday inquiries and confirmed orders before treating the current quiet market as a lasting direction.
For magnet buyers, the September 28 market was a pause rather than a strong directional move. The next useful signal will be whether downstream orders and transaction volumes recover after the holiday.
