Pr-Nd Prices Hold as Gadolinium Weakens in Thin Rare-Earth Trading

Summary: Shanghai Metals Market reported steady Pr-Nd oxide and alloy offers in the afternoon of October 26, while gadolinium oxide continued to soften and spot transactions remained limited. The snapshot suggests cautious, need-based buying rather than a broad change in magnet-material demand.

Pr-Nd offers stabilized after an early pullback

Shanghai Metals Market’s October 26 afternoon trading comment said Pr-Nd oxide prices held at the morning level after an earlier pullback. Suppliers were reluctant to quote aggressively, metal producers mostly made tentative inquiries and few firm transactions were reported.

Pr-Nd alloy offers also remained stable during the afternoon. SMM said lower cost support left limited room for additional concessions, while downstream buyers continued to inquire without placing many orders. This is a narrow intraday observation, not proof that the market has established a lasting floor.

Gadolinium remained the softer segment

Gadolinium oxide continued to retreat as sellers adjusted offers, but downstream purchasing was mainly need-based and follow-through was weak. Gadolinium iron offers were reported as stable, with buyers largely waiting and overall trading activity subdued.

The difference between oxide and alloy behavior matters for magnet producers. Oxide movements affect conversion economics, but alloy quotes can also reflect inventory, processing costs, contract structure and the timing of downstream orders. A single afternoon’s stability in alloy offers does not necessarily mean margins or end-market demand have improved.

Practical checks for procurement teams

  1. Timestamp every quotation. Thin markets can move without high transaction volume, so compare offers from the same trading window and on the same tax and delivery basis.
  2. Separate inquiries from deals. Supplier offers and buyer questions do not establish a transacted benchmark.
  3. Monitor oxide-to-alloy spreads. Track Pr-Nd oxide, Pr-Nd metal and finished-magnet quotations separately to identify where pressure is building.
  4. Match buying to production needs. For immediate orders, confirm grade, dysprosium or terbium additions, coating, lead time and lot traceability instead of reacting only to a daily price direction.

What the market comment does not show

The report does not provide evidence of a broad demand recovery, a sustained downtrend in gadolinium or a change in long-term NdFeB fundamentals. It is a short market communication based on public information, market contacts and SMM’s internal data model. Buyers should combine it with executed transaction data, supplier quotations and their own order book before changing inventory policy.
