NdFeB Producers Face a Split Recovery as Q4 Demand Builds

Summary: September NdFeB output improved only modestly, while stronger producers and early fourth-quarter stocking could support a more active October.

China’s NdFeB magnet sector entered the end of September with a mixed operating picture rather than a broad peak-season recovery. Shanghai Metals Market reported that total September production increased only slightly from the previous month, while performance became more divided among manufacturers.

A recovery that is not evenly distributed

According to the SMM analysis, leading NdFeB producers were operating at high utilization, mid-sized companies were running at more moderate levels, and weaker participants showed little improvement. This gap matters because a headline increase in industry output can hide very different order conditions across suppliers.

The usual September demand lift was less visible than expected. SMM linked the softer season to weak end-user demand, export checks, cautious downstream inventory management and elevated praseodymium-neodymium raw-material prices. Together, those factors encouraged buyers to keep stocks lean and purchase closer to immediate requirements.

Why October could be stronger

SMM expects a clearer production increase in October. The expected improvement is tied to demand that did not arrive in September and to early fourth-quarter inventory preparation by end users. That makes the outlook a timing shift rather than proof of a strong, broad-based expansion.

For magnet buyers, the practical implication is that delivery conditions may vary by supplier, grade and application. Producers with established customers and stable raw-material access may become busier, while smaller factories may still have spare capacity. Buyers should therefore avoid assuming that one utilization rate represents the whole market.

Procurement points to verify

Purchasing teams should confirm production slots, raw-material price validity, lead times and export-document requirements before placing fourth-quarter orders. For high-performance grades, it is also useful to verify how the supplier manages dysprosium or terbium additions, material traceability and batch consistency.

The analysis is a short-term market snapshot, not a guarantee of October demand or pricing. Order releases, end-market sales and policy procedures can still change the production schedule. The strongest signal will be actual order conversion rather than planned utilization alone.
