Pr-Nd Prices Extend Decline in Thin Afternoon Trading

Summary: Pr-Nd oxide and alloy offers continued to edge lower during the September 16 afternoon session, but buying interest and actual shipment volumes remained limited. The move is a short-term sourcing signal rather than evidence of a sustained trend in finished NdFeB magnet prices.

Praseodymium-neodymium prices remained under pressure in afternoon trading on September 16, according to Shanghai Metals Market (SMM). Suppliers reduced oxide offers, while downstream buyers showed little additional interest. Pr-Nd alloy quotations also softened as producers responded to weaker raw-material costs, but negotiations still focused on lower-priced cargoes.

Lower offers did not unlock strong demand

The combination of softer quotations and thin trading is important. A market decline supported by large transaction volumes can carry a different signal from one driven mainly by sellers testing lower offers. In this session, SMM described overall shipment volumes as low and actual deals as limited.

For magnet buyers, this means the afternoon movement should be treated as a narrow snapshot. It may influence the replacement cost of NdFeB feedstock, but it does not automatically translate into an equal change in the price of a finished magnet. Suppliers must still account for material utilization, machining difficulty, coating, magnetization, inspection and production scheduling.

Gadolinium stabilized after earlier weakness

SMM reported that gadolinium oxide stabilized after earlier declines, with sellers holding offers broadly steady even as actual transactions remained sparse. Gadolinium-iron alloy offers were also unchanged in the afternoon, while inquiries and trading volume stayed subdued.

Gadolinium can be relevant in some magnet-alloy strategies, but its role depends on the required magnetic and temperature performance. Procurement teams should avoid assuming that movements in one raw-material market justify an untested grade change. Technical validation remains necessary whenever composition or process routes change.

How to use an intraday market signal

  • Request a dated quotation: Make the quote date and validity period explicit.
  • Separate material and processing: Ask whether material assumptions, tooling and secondary operations can be identified clearly.
  • Confirm the order profile: Sample quantities and scheduled production orders can carry different cost structures.
  • Lock the specification: Grade, dimensions, tolerance, coating and magnetization should be fixed before price comparisons.
  • Watch several sessions: A sequence of market updates is more informative than one afternoon observation.

Buyer takeaway

The September 16 afternoon session showed a continued easing of Pr-Nd offers without a matching improvement in transaction activity. Buyers may find selective negotiating opportunities, but should not convert this single observation into a long-term price assumption. A complete RFQ and a clearly dated commercial offer remain the best basis for sourcing decisions.
