Summary: Praseodymium-neodymium prices recovered modestly on September 10, but limited downstream willingness to follow higher offers kept rare-earth trading uneven. For NdFeB buyers, the change is a reason to refresh quotations and delivery assumptions, not evidence that a sustained price cycle has begun.
Pr-Nd recovered while heavy rare earths diverged
Shanghai Metals Market reported that Pr-Nd oxide rose by 1,000 yuan per metric ton and Pr-Nd alloy by 1,500 yuan per metric ton on September 10. The move followed a stabilization in futures and a tightening of lower-priced spot material. At the same time, dysprosium oxide and dysprosium-iron alloy each moved 5,000 yuan per metric ton lower, while terbium products were unchanged after recent declines.
The split matters because a finished NdFeB magnet is not priced from a single commodity signal. Base Pr-Nd content, any dysprosium or terbium addition, magnet grade, coating, tolerance, magnetization and inspection requirements all affect the quoted part. A modest rebound in Pr-Nd can therefore coexist with softer heavy-rare-earth inputs and still produce different outcomes across grades.
Transactions did not confirm a broad uptrend
SMM said suppliers tested slightly higher offers as low-priced cargoes became less available, but downstream magnet companies remained cautious and showed limited acceptance of higher prices. Actual transactions did not expand materially. Dysprosium products continued to face weak inquiries, while terbium trading shifted toward a wait-and-see pattern.
Outside China, several FOB quotations were also described as weak during the week: terbium oxide and terbium metal each declined by $7 per kilogram, while neodymium oxide declined by $5 per kilogram. Other listed Pr-Nd and medium-heavy rare-earth FOB prices were stable. These figures are market observations, not a universal supplier price list, and should be validated against the grade, quantity and delivery term in each quotation.
What magnet procurement teams should do
Buyers should ask suppliers to state the quotation validity period and identify which raw-material assumptions can trigger a repricing discussion. When comparing offers, keep the technical basis identical: material grade, maximum operating temperature, coating, dimensional tolerance, magnetization direction, inspection standard and Incoterm.
The near-term signal is mixed rather than directional. SMM noted that whether Pr-Nd can continue higher depends on actual downstream order execution. Procurement teams should therefore combine market data with confirmed factory schedules, incoming-order visibility and application qualification before changing inventory or sourcing policy.
